Installation

Birthday Bar ships as an internet-enabled disk image.  One of two things will happen when you download the software, depending on the web browser you are using and whether your computer is set to open safe files after downloading:

I: If ‘Open “safe” files after downloading’ is enabled

If Safari’s preference to ‘Open “safe” files after downloading’ is enabled and you are in OS 10.3 or OS 10.4 the Birthday Bar application and help document will appear on the desktop once your download of birthdaybar.dmg is complete.  On Mac OS 10.5 a folder named Birthday Bar will appear your user’s Downloads folder (accessible through the Dock.)

On Mac OS 10.3 or Mac OS 10.4 drag the BirthdayBar icon to your applications folder.  Open your Applications folder and double-click on the BirthdayBar icon to launch the program.

On Mac OS 10.5 open the Birthday Bar folder.  Then drag the BirthdayBar icon to your Applications folder.  Open the Applications folder and double-click on the BirthdayBar icon to launch the program.

Note: Birthday Bar can be run from anywhere on your hard drive and does not, in fact, need to be moved to the Applications folder.  For organization and simplicity, however, this is the most logical location for you to install the software.

II: If ‘Open “safe” files after downloading’ is not enabled

If you are using a web browser other than Safari or if the ‘Open “safe” files after downloading’ preference has been turned off you will see a file called birthdaybar.dmg on your desktop or in your downloads folder.  Double-click on this icon to open the disk image containing the Birthday Bar software.

A disk labeled ‘Birthday Bar’ will mount on your desktop and a folder labeled Birthday Bar will open.  Drag the BirthdayBar icon to your Applications folder.  Open the Applications folder and double-click on the BirthdayBar icon to launch the program.
You may then eject the disk labeled Birthday Bar by selecting the Birthday Bar disk and selecting ‘Eject “Birthday Bar”’ from the File menu of the Finder.  Afterwards you may dispose of the birthdaybar.dmg file by dragging it to the trash.

Note: Birthday Bar can be run from anywhere on your hard drive and does not, in fact, need to be moved to the Applications folder.  For organization and simplicity, however, this is the most logical location for you to install the software.
